Aircraft losses during World War II - 1939/40

The outbreak of World War II resulted in a significant number of aircraft and airmen being lost over the North-East of England. The airfields in the Northern part of of region were mainly used for operational training, though many fighter squadron units used the North East to rest their personnel while at the same time provide air defence of the region. The bases in what is now Tees Valley were largely assigned to Bomber Command.
